Well met! I’m Kalista, and I co-admin Istari with my husband, Arius. We've run a few other sites together, from an old west Supernatural roleplay to a Tron Legacy board, but Istari is our first original creation. It was originally adapted as a D&D campaign setting for a group of friends, but I always loved the idea of mixing magic and technology to get both a classic and urban fantasy feel. I still enjoy playing tabletop D&D, but these days I tend to spend more time on writing and online roleplay.

Along with avid writing comes avid reading, and I always have at least one book going. I tend to bounce back and forth between urban or high fantasy and science fiction, but I also enjoy crime novels and a handful of the classics. I also love gaming on the Playstation and Nintendo 3DS. I love a wide variety of games, but the original Mass Effect trilogy is nearest and dearest to my heart.

I tend to be online from midday to late evening, depending on my work schedule, and I usually lurk throughout the day. I love working with coding and graphics, so if you’re having trouble with something or have questions about the setting, feel free to message me or hop into the chat box. I’m always open to feedback, and I hope you enjoy playing in Istari as much as I’ve enjoyed working on it!

Heyla! I'm Arius, one of the admins here on Istari, and Kalista's lucky husband. I love writing (obviously), especially horror, fantasy, and sci fi, though I've been known to dabble in poetry and even fanfiction in the past. Though I don't seem to find the time for them as much as I used to, I enjoy playing games, both video and tabletop, and if I'm not around on the site it's probably because I'm playing my PS4 or 3DS.

I'm a great devourer of all sorts of literature, from high fantasy epics to dry historical tales, from fiction to non-fiction, and even comic books, which I have a huge passion for. I co-own a small comic shop in my hometown, which is something of a dream come true for me, and I've been collecting and reading comics and graphic novels since I was about five years old.

I'm usually around in the evenings to answer questions, play in the cbox, or even just shoot the breeze, so feel free to hit me up if you ever need anything!

Hey there! I’m Kay, Istari's moderator, and it’s nice to meet you! I’ve been roleplaying and writing for more than ten years and have been playing on Istari for about the whole time that it’s been open. I’ve known Kali and Arius for almost ten years now and actually got my online handler name from Arius. I’m a frequent writer and I do get distracted relatively easily as I’m always on social media sites. But currently I’ve been distracted with watching TV shows.

I’m an avid TV watcher ranging from Supernatural all the way to anime and nostalgia TV shows. Currently I’ve gotten myself stuck on Gargoyles. I’m also a classic anime fan, I’ve seen some of the newer animes, but the classics are my favorite. I’m also into a lot of superhero movies and horror movies, but movies in general are the things that I’m doing if I’m not writing.

I used to be a night owl, but given my 4am work schedule, I can be found lurking around here at high noon to about early evening, I’m a lurker so there will always definitely be someone there to answer your questions! Welcome to Istari!

Early twenties
Scavenger, tinker, and self-proclaimed queen of the "Pit"
Istari, the Pit
Em is short for "Myshka", the name given to her by the man who found her
Face Claim
Alycia Debnam-Carey
Life will come our way, it has only just begun
The world will die alone, the frail will fall below
Time will take our place, we return it back to one
The calm before the cold, the long and lonely road
Physical Description
Myshka's appearance is generally described as dark, slightly grubby, and very intimidating. She tends to frame her muddy green eyes with dark make-up, oil, grease paint, or whatever else she has at hand, and her long, dark hair is generally left long and free, though pulled out of her face. Generally her face is set in a severe expression, though on the rare occasions that her features soften she's been described as quite lovely.

Most of Myshka's wardrobe--with the exception of a small handful of pieces purchased from traveling merchants--has been pieced together from the odds and ends found scattered throughout the Pit. That means on any given day she could be wearing armor scavenged from car and airplane parts, or robes made out of the curtains of houseboats or RVs, and the like. She also has a small gear-shaped charm given to her by the man who found and raised her that she wears on her forehead when conducting "official" business.

» When new "goodies" turn up in the Pit; one can never tell what the rift in the Veil might pluck from Earth and deposit on Em's doorstep

» Taking things apart and putting them back together again, sometimes in wildly different ways, just to see if she can

» Exploring the vast mess that is the the Pit in search of odds and ends that can be repurposed for use or sale

» Summer, when the merchants arrive, bringing with them gold to spend, news to share, and the camaraderie--no matter how brief--that Em craves

» Music; Em loves to sing and tinker with the few instruments she finds among the general wreckage and chaos of the Pit

» Winter; it is a long, cold, lonely, dangerous season for her

» Those who don't show her the proper respect, or respect her authority in her self-declared kingdom

» The rare years when times are tough and no merchants at all show up, leaving her completely and utterly alone for far too long

» Dealing with the bodies of the people unfortunate enough to get pulled through the rift, either on their own or inside of their vehicles; it can be messy, soul-crushing work

» When she can't fix something, or make something work the way she thinks it should; it's frustrating and she's far too stubborn to just accept it and move on

» Years of running, climbing, and hauling have left her in prime physical condition

» She has a sharp, clever, ever-expanding mind

» Is a shrewd but fair negotiator when it comes to merchants and others who come to her seeking something

» Speaks several Istaran languages, a necessary skill when it comes to haggling with traveling merchants

» Has an almost supernatural ability to take things apart, master them, and recreate them into whatever she needs; she's a tinker and scavenger second to none with an entire city of junk at her disposal

» Everything she knows of Earth or Istari comes from books and tales told by travelers; she has no personal experience with anything other than the Pit

» Has little experience with personal interactions with people beyond haggling with merchants

» Sometimes has an inflated or romantic idea of the way things outside the Pit work, due to the tales and stories she's read or heard

» There are times, especially during the long, lonely winters, that she falls into deep, crushing, brooding bouts of depression

» Ultimately, she is alone; she has no real friends, no family, and even though she claims to be a queen, she has no subjects

» To explore both worlds and visit all the places she's read and heard about

» Make some kind of long-term connection to the world outside the Pit; she's been too lonely for too long

» Someday truly, fully catalog and organize the Pit to make things easier to find, which makes things easier to sell

» That she'll someone get injured while exploring the Pit, with no one around to help her

» Discovering that the outside worlds are just too big for her, and she'll have to flee back to the safety and familiarity of the Pit

» What if whatever warped and twisted gate that supplies the Pit suddenly just... stops? Her livelihood will be gone, and all she'll be left with is a heap of old junk

Aloof, intimidating, and mysterious, Myshka has spent years cultivating just the right reputation for herself. Word of her and her eccentricities has spread across Istari, carried by those merchants and adventures fortunate enough to have gained her favor and done business with her. She's discovered over time that it is better to be respected and perhaps even a little bit feared rather than appear weak, so that is the persona she puts on when confronted by other people.

Because she has been crafting this persona for so long, Myshka is unfortunately very inept in any social situation beyond wheeling and dealing with merchants or doling out justice and punishment for those who break the laws of her self-declared kingdom. She understands how "normal" conversations and interactions are supposed to work, learned mostly from books and magazine's she's collected from around the Pit, but she still has trouble figuring out how exactly to go about such things. This is, in fact, one of the reasons she has finally decided to leave her kingdom and experience life "Outside".

If someone could look past her... unusual exterior, they would find a young woman of incredibly sharp wit and intelligence, all gleaned from the bits and pieces, odds and ends of literature, comic books, newspapers, and other tidbits of Earth information that make their way to the pit. Myshka is optimistic by nature, and though she's slow to warm up to someone, once she does she will be a loyal and true friend for life.

Deep in the wilderness of Istari lies one of that world's greatest mysteries, and most incredible wonders. Known only as "the Pit," it is a massive crater that acts as a sort of lodestone to Gates on Earth, randomly and often violently tapping into those Gates and forcibly pulling anyone and anything nearby into itself. As such, the Pit has become something of a massive junkyard, filled with bits and pieces of Earth technology, as well as the hulking remains of ships, planes, and other vehicles that were unfortunate enough to be near a Gate when the Pit started to act up. How and why the Pit does this are lost to history, though vague, ancient legends suggest the unusual nature of the place is due to some long forgotten magical catastrophe.

It's quite likely that no one will ever truly know.

Myshka's history may as well begin with the first of her cries in Istari, a young toddler still strapped safe and snug into the seat of the small single engine plane that'd been pulled into the Pit and dashed against the various canyon walls of steel and iron. There were two other people in the plane with her, male and female and both adults, but they hadn't survived the accident, and it's likely that the little girl would have died as well if her cries hadn't been heard by the Pit's only actual resident, an old man named Andrei.

It had been during one of World War II's furious air battles that the soviet pilot and his plane had been plucked from Earth's skies and unceremoniously deposited in the Pit. He survived the incident with surprisingly few injuries, and spent the next several months scavenging for any sort of food he could find (and, amazingly, he found more preserved food in the holds of ships and trucks than he expected), vainly looking for a way to escape, and finally accepting his fate and determining that he would instead learn all he could about this strange new place. And so, the Pit became home to Andrei for the next fifty or so years, and he continued to scavenger for whatever he needed amongst the wreckage.

This is how he came across the little girl, the first survivor he'd ever encountered during all his years of life in the Pit. He took pity on the child, and though he was more than a little mad from so many decades of relative solitude and had no clue how to take care of a little girl, he still decided that it was his responsibility to keep her safe and healthy. It wasn't easy, and he even had to reach out to those few traveling merchants that he'd routinely chased away from "his territory" to get the necessary supplies to care for such a young child, but in the end his love for the girl and his dedication to her safety and learning did much to form and impact her early years.

It was Andrei who named the girl "Myshka" after the Russian word for "mouse", as that's exactly what she reminded him of, especially as she got older and was able to effortlessly scamper about the Pit, often climbing to bits of wreckage that his old bones were no longer able to reach, and discovering many new caches of food and supplies along the way. Myshka showed a sharp wit and deep intelligence, and with little else to occupy her time she soon became a master tinker, able to build and rebuild just about anything in a fraction of the time it took Andrei, who was no slouch himself. Due to the unusual nature of the Pit, it was even possible to get some of the Earth technology to power on and actually work, though never for very long, and never if taken too far away from the edges of the Pit's crater.

As Myshka grew older and stronger, Andrei grew older and weaker. Thankfully the ties he'd finally established with merchants and other travelers held strong over the years, and Myshka was able to use her skills as a tinkerer and barterer to make the old Soviet pilot's final years as comfortable as possible. In the end old age caught up to Andrei though, and Myshka buried him in an elaborately constructed mausoleum in a secret location deep within the confines of the Pit, where no one else was likely to find and disturb his final rest.

Little changed at Andrei's death, at least on the outside. Myshka continued her daily forays into the Pit, pushing further and further in with every trip, still wondering at how large and seemingly endless the place was. She continued to do business with the usual merchants and wandering junkmen, and even entertained the rare adventurer or mercenary who needed a place to rest of heal up. But inside, Myshka was slowly succumbing to a deep, cold loneliness. Andrei had always been there for her and with her, and now that he was gone she had nobody for the first time in her life. Yes, merchants and the like came and went, but there were entire stretches of months and months at a time when she never saw another sentient creature. Myshka wondered how Andrei had survived so many decades alone, but that wondering only made her miss her mentor even more.

Two years after Andrei's death, Myshka finally got up the nerve to go through his scant personal belongings, needing to have them dealt with and out of sight if she ever hoped to move on. There, amongst his books and other trinkets, she found a letter that he'd written to her, possibly on the very day of his death, telling her that she should not waste her life in the Pit as he had, that she should go out and see all the wondrous places she'd read and heard about, that she should experience the very things all of her favorite tales and stories described. Deep inside, she knew that he was right, and she knew the only way to conquer the loneliness that was threatening to destroy her was to leave her home, her kingdom, behind, and to see what else the worlds had to offer. The Pit would always be there, and with a little preparation she could make sure no one would disturb or invade it, but it was time to go out and see what else there was to see.

It took nearly half a year to establish the protections and traps around the Pit that Myshka would leave behind, and another couple of months before a wandering adventurer happened by who was willing to be her escort and guide out in the "wide world". Casting one last, sad glance over her shoulder at the only home she'd ever known, Myshka set out on a journey that--she hoped--would kill the loneliness inside and give her something new to live for.
