Kalista
Well met! I’m Kalista, and I co-admin Istari with my husband, Arius. We've run a few other sites together, from an old west Supernatural roleplay to a Tron Legacy board, but Istari is our first original creation. It was originally adapted as a D&D campaign setting for a group of friends, but I always loved the idea of mixing magic and technology to get both a classic and urban fantasy feel. I still enjoy playing tabletop D&D, but these days I tend to spend more time on writing and online roleplay.

Along with avid writing comes avid reading, and I always have at least one book going. I tend to bounce back and forth between urban or high fantasy and science fiction, but I also enjoy crime novels and a handful of the classics. I also love gaming on the Playstation and Nintendo 3DS. I love a wide variety of games, but the original Mass Effect trilogy is nearest and dearest to my heart.

I tend to be online from midday to late evening, depending on my work schedule, and I usually lurk throughout the day. I love working with coding and graphics, so if you’re having trouble with something or have questions about the setting, feel free to message me or hop into the chat box. I’m always open to feedback, and I hope you enjoy playing in Istari as much as I’ve enjoyed working on it!

Arius
Heyla! I'm Arius, one of the admins here on Istari, and Kalista's lucky husband. I love writing (obviously), especially horror, fantasy, and sci fi, though I've been known to dabble in poetry and even fanfiction in the past. Though I don't seem to find the time for them as much as I used to, I enjoy playing games, both video and tabletop, and if I'm not around on the site it's probably because I'm playing my PS4 or 3DS.

I'm a great devourer of all sorts of literature, from high fantasy epics to dry historical tales, from fiction to non-fiction, and even comic books, which I have a huge passion for. I co-own a small comic shop in my hometown, which is something of a dream come true for me, and I've been collecting and reading comics and graphic novels since I was about five years old.

I'm usually around in the evenings to answer questions, play in the cbox, or even just shoot the breeze, so feel free to hit me up if you ever need anything!

Kay
Hey there! I’m Kay, Istari's moderator, and it’s nice to meet you! I’ve been roleplaying and writing for more than ten years and have been playing on Istari for about the whole time that it’s been open. I’ve known Kali and Arius for almost ten years now and actually got my online handler name from Arius. I’m a frequent writer and I do get distracted relatively easily as I’m always on social media sites. But currently I’ve been distracted with watching TV shows.

I’m an avid TV watcher ranging from Supernatural all the way to anime and nostalgia TV shows. Currently I’ve gotten myself stuck on Gargoyles. I’m also a classic anime fan, I’ve seen some of the newer animes, but the classics are my favorite. I’m also into a lot of superhero movies and horror movies, but movies in general are the things that I’m doing if I’m not writing.

I used to be a night owl, but given my 4am work schedule, I can be found lurking around here at high noon to about early evening, I’m a lurker so there will always definitely be someone there to answer your questions! Welcome to Istari!

[/dohtml]Lily sipped absently at her drink, glancing periodically at the text message on her phone.

Murphy's on 2nd Ave. 11PM. Name's Brennan.

She'd received the message earlier that day, from one of her many contacts on the east coast. It'd been several days since she'd put out the call that she was looking for a magicker to help wrap up her current job, and her vast network of fellow hunters and "in-the-know" civilians hadn't failed her. A meeting had been arranged with this "Brennan" at an Irish tavern in New York, and Lily had spent all day tearing up the coast to reach the place in time; she'd actually been stopped by two highway patrolmen along the way, but thankfully her incredibly well-forged FBI credentials had gotten her off the hook both times.

It was ten thirty-six when she strolled into Murphy's, took a seat at a table with a clear view of the entrance, and ordered a drink for herself. Twenty minutes had passed since then, and she was wondering exactly what sort of guy this "Brennan" was going to be, or if he was even going to show up. It was a tricky business getting in touch with a reliable spellcaster Earth-side, and even trickier to find one that wasn't likely to stab you in the back if the opportunity presented itself. That was Lily's experience, any way, but the truth was, she couldn't take down her current target on her own, and she had the black eye and bruises to prove it.

Orcs rarely made the transition from Istari to Earth, mostly on account of how difficult it was for them to blend in in a world that consisted almost exclusively of human beings. Apparently the orc that Lily was hunting was adept at keeping a low profile while he racked up his body count, but what made the situation worse was that he had... something that caused the hunter's eyes to just slide right over him. Whether it was a spell, or some sort of magical talisman, or even a rare in-born ability, the orc was almost impossible for Lily to get a bead on; close-quarters combat was a little better, but even with all of her training it was difficult for her to beat an opponent of greater strength and endurance while essentially blind.

"He'd better know what he's doing," Lily muttered to herself about the mysterious Brennan. She was about to gesture for another drink when movement at the entrance caught her eye and she glanced over. At first she dismissed the woman who'd just walked in, but something about her caused Lily to take a second, appraising look: long, dark hair pulled back into a simple yet functional ponytail, fair skin and large, bright eyes that held just enough mystery to make her seem seductive, and a lithe build and graceful way of moving all added up into a woman that Lily found incredibly attractive, even captivating.

Lily sipped her drink and let her eyes settle on the newcomer shamelessly for a long moment before she looked down at her phone again, wondering if maybe she'd gotten the time or place wrong. She knew she hadn't, but it was now just past eleven with no sign of Brennan... It looked like she'd been sent on a wild goose chase, but if that was the case, at least she'd ended up in a place that had great drinks and even better scenery. [dohtml]

[/dohtml]Lily had never hunted a shtriga before, but she knew enough about them from her research to know not only their habits, but that they were relatively difficult to kill.

The first inkling that something unusual was going on in New Orleans was a rash of mysterious deaths among the city's teenagers. A bit of digging on Lily and Brennan's part had eventually unearthed one telling commonality between all of the victims: they were what was popularly referred to as "urban explorers", and they'd all recently spent time in a local abandoned amusement park that'd been shut down by Hurricane Katrina more than a decade earlier.

As such, it made sense that that would be their next destination.

The amusement park had an incredibly creepy and appealing atmosphere, and Lily could immediately understand the draw it had on those fascinated by exploring such locations. Truthfully, under better circumstances the hunter admitted to herself that even she would love the opportunity to snoop around the place, but that would have to wait until she and Brennan had taken care of the creature that'd apparently set up shop in the ruins of the park.

Standing just outside, armed and ready to go, Lily glanced at her wife with a wry smile.

"Ready?"

Knight

Preferable Playby: Hugh Jackman
Age: Late thirties / early forties
Group: Mortals

Knight is one of the legendary "King's Men" of Westenra, a small group of trusted fighters, assassins, and mages that was tasked with protecting the king and his family at the cost of their own lives if need be. When Westenra fell to the vampires and the royal family was slaughtered, the remaining King's Men went into hiding, but remained in the fallen kingdom to do their part in slaying as many vampires as possible, and rescuing any prisoners that they could. About fifteen years ago Knight, Rook, and Bishop (the remaining King's Men) found Lily in the wild and took the girl in, training her and making her one of them, giving her the codename "Pawn." Knight was responsible for all of Lily's combat training, and just about everything she knows about fighting she owes to him. After the death of Rook nearly ten years ago, Knight and Bishop cast Lily out of Westenra, knowing that she'd played a part in their comrade's death.

Knight is a very open character, and you can do just about anything you want with him when it comes to his background, personality, and real name. I'd highly recommend reading Lily's application to get "caught up" with what's been going on. PM me with questions, and so we can hammer out the details!

Bishop

Preferable Playby: Jeremy Irons
Age: Looks to be in his fifties, but since mages tend to be long-lived it's totally up to the player
Group: Gifted (Mage)

Bishop is one of the legendary "King's Men" of Westenra, a small group of trusted fighters, assassins, and mages that was tasked with protecting the king and his family at the cost of their own lives if need be. When Westenra fell to the vampires and the royal family was slaughtered, the remaining King's Men went into hiding, but remained in the fallen kingdom to do their part in slaying as many vampires as possible, and rescuing any prisoners that they could. About fifteen years ago Knight, Rook, and Bishop (the remaining King's Men) found Lily in the wild and took the girl in, training her and making her one of them, giving her the codename "Pawn." Though Lily is no mage, Bishop was responsible for teaching her how magic works, how to counter it when possible, and how to recognize when it was at play. After the death of Rook nearly ten years ago, Knight and Bishop cast Lily out of Westenra, knowing that she'd played a part in their comrade's death.

Bishop is a very open character, and you can do just about anything you want with him when it comes to his background, personality, and real name. I'd highly recommend reading Lily's application to get "caught up" with what's been going on. PM me with questions, and so we can hammer out the details!

The howling of the wolves grew closer as Lily stood atop the wall that surrounded the village.

Her eyes scanned the distant treeline, picking up details that a human's sight would never have noticed on a dark, moonless night like tonight: shadows moved under the branches and between the bushes, making a detailed check of the perimeter, no doubt searching for the traps she'd left this morning. Whines and yelps of pain had echoed across the distance to her only moments ago, eliciting a grim smile of satisfaction. While she may not have killed any of the wolves with her little surprises, she'd certainly wounded some, and that evened the odds, even if only a small amount.

The village had been right to purchase her services though, as these were not normal wolves, or all that they might appear so. They were far more intelligent, and their speed, strength, and durability marked them as unnatural. Lily had dealt with similar creatures before, and in each of those cases she'd found herself facing off against a particularly old and powerful vampire, who used beasts like these as protection during the daylight hours, or at other times when they might be vulnerable. If there was a vampire out there, though, Lily couldn't sense it, and that was unusual.

Something else then. A mage perhaps, or they could be leftovers from a vampire's pack who escaped their master's fate...

Regardless of where they'd come from or who they were or weren't serving, the wolves had to be dealt with. At first they'd only been making off with livestock from the village, but the pack had grown bolder over the passing months, and now it wasn't uncommon for them to attack the small settlement, sometimes for food and sometimes just for the hell of it, or so she'd been told.

Her eyes flicked down to the ground behind her, where a handful of other hunters and brave villagers stood ready to aid her if she needed it. She didn't know any of them personally though, and as such probably wouldn't depend on any of them to really have her back. With her partner Brennan back in the other world visiting her father, Lily was on her own, and though she'd worked solo for years and years before joining up with the witch, she found herself disliking the idea of being "alone" as it were.

Movement from the forest caught her attention and focused her thoughts once more, and the dhampir cursed under her breath as she watched a dozen or so black shapes bound out of the shadows of the trees and tear across the clearing toward the village.

They were coming.

Time to go to work, she thought, her usual mask of unreadable indifference sliding into place. Let's see if any of these people know what they're doing, or if I'll be picking their remains out of wolf teeth by the end of the night...
